The Kaohsiung City Government launched a three-day zero-sustainable exhibition with the theme of “Kaohsiung Net Zero by 2050.” The exhibition showcased various highlights such as using incinerated bottom ash to create a cement image wall to build the image of a port city, interactive exhibition items flipping the SDGs, and limited-time dynamic filters for the public to voice out for sustainability. Additionally, there were interactive games where people could become Kaohsiung Bear Investigators to explore the city government’s policies on net zero carbon reduction.

A significant highlight of this year’s exhibition was the establishment of the only “Net Zero Academy” in Taiwan last November. The academy’s logo, formed by the letters N, Z, and I, symbolizes the continuous rooting and talent cultivation of net zero education. This year, the academy focused on three major course directions: general education, certification, and technology, planning training content according to different industry needs or characteristics to cultivate internationally certified sustainable professionals.

Furthermore, the “Industrial Net Zero Alliance,” established by the city government two years ago, continued to support enterprises in building a low-carbon industrial chain. The implementation of the “Kaohsiung Net Zero City Development Autonomous Regulations” in June this year was the first local net zero regulation since the enactment of climate change response laws, setting clear goals of 30% reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

Apart from the carefully designed exhibition area visuals and setups, the event also prepared eco-friendly hemp bags with the “Net Zero Academy” logo as sustainable souvenirs to be given to participants of the interactive games. Booths also showcased the Kaohsiung Qishan Nansheng Community Development Association’s use of lychee agricultural waste materials to make eco-friendly tableware, as well as the “deya” meal bag made from recycled marine waste, symbolizing the collective efforts of civil society towards sustainability.

The rich display content attracted nearly four thousand people to witness the city government’s efforts in the field of sustainability in recent years. In addition to deepening exchanges with other sustainable partners and the public through the exhibition opportunity, the Kaohsiung City Government also aims to share its own municipal sustainability strategy and development experience. By focusing on more forward-looking and clearer sustainable directions, the city government will continue to lead the dual transformation of urban digital net zero, guiding the trend of sustainable actions such as net zero emissions, low-carbon cities, and circular economy to deepen Kaohsiung’s influence in the field of sustainability.
