The social network X has suspended its highly criticized use of personal data from its European users to train its artificial intelligence (AI) program, according to a statement from the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) published on Thursday, August 8. The DPC acts on behalf of the European Union (EU).
According to the DPC, Elon Musk’s site used the personal data of its European users between May 7 and August 1. It had taken legal action in Ireland for violating EU data protection rules (GDPR).
Meanwhile, Meta had to suspend its project in June to use personal data of its users in an artificial intelligence program, following complaints in 11 European countries. The association Noyb had urged authorities to intervene “urgently” to prevent the implementation of this new privacy policy. It accused Meta of wanting to use all the data collected from its billions of users since 2007 for use in an “experimental AI technology without any limits.”
The agreement between X and the DPC signifies a step towards compliance with EU regulations regarding the protection of personal data. This move comes in response to increasing concerns from users and privacy advocates regarding the use of personal information for AI training purposes.
The suspension of the use of personal data for AI training by X highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in handling user data. It also emphasizes the need for companies to adhere to data protection regulations to ensure the privacy and security of user information.
As technology continues to advance, ensuring the ethical and responsible use of personal data in AI development will be crucial. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to establish clear guidelines and standards for data privacy in the digital age. By prioritizing user privacy and data protection, companies can build trust with their users and demonstrate their commitment to upholding ethical practices in the use of AI technologies.
