World Bank Initiates $225 Million Bond for Amazon Reforestation Efforts
In a groundbreaking move, the World Bank has recently issued a $225 million bond with a 9-year maturity period, directly tied to reforestation efforts in the Amazon region. This initiative marks the largest outcome bond in the history of the World Bank, signaling a significant step towards sustainable development and environmental conservation.
Unlike traditional carbon credit sales aimed at emission reduction, this bond offers investors financial returns linked to the carbon removal generated by the reforestation project in the Brazilian Amazon. Approximately $36 million from the bond proceeds will be allocated to support Mombak, a Brazilian company collaborating with local landowners to replant native tree species in the Amazon region. Microsoft has also agreed to purchase the carbon credits generated by this project.
The bond guarantees a 100% principal amount, with the $225 million in proceeds earmarked for funding the World Bank’s sustainable development projects worldwide. Investors can expect a minimum guaranteed annual return rate of 1.745%, with the potential for returns to reach as high as 4.362% based on project performance.
Jorge Familiar, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank, emphasized the significance of this bond issuance, stating, “The historic participation in today’s transaction demonstrates that private investors are eager to link financial returns with positive development outcomes in the Amazon region. As interest in this financial instrument continues to grow, and the scope of supported industries expands, we are encouraged by this largest-ever outcome bond.”
Issued by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the bond will be priced at face value and is set to mature on July 31, 2033, with a settlement date of August 20, 2033.
